SRV: Europe’s Most Environmentally Friendly Galvanizing Plant Completed in Lieto
The construction of a hot-dip galvanizing plant for Aurajoki Oy has been completed in Lieto. The project, executed as a collaborative construction management contract, began in May 2023 and the demanding construction work took about a year. The most environmentally friendly galvanizing plant in Europe will be operational from July 1, 2024.
Aurajoki Oy, a specialist in metal surface treatment services, was provided with new production and office facilities spanning approximately 6,200 gross square meters. The total volume of the plant is about 85,400 cubic meters.

A Modern Plant Built with Lifecycle Wisdom
The most environmentally friendly and modern hot-dip galvanizing plant in Europe has been constructed using the latest technology, enabling significant environmental benefits in terms of emissions and energy consumption.
The process technology utilized in the plant ensures significantly lower consumption of energy, raw materials, and water compared to existing hot-dip galvanizing plants. Energy generated in the factory process is recovered and directed to the Lieto district heating network. A solar power system will also be installed in the building later.
During construction, special attention was paid to waste sorting. The on-site sorting rate is an excellent 88%, with 61% of the materials being recycled and 99% utilized.
Significant Role of Building Technology in the Project
Due to the complexity of the plant’s technical systems, building technology played a significant role in the project. Managing the technical systems from design guidance to production and commissioning, as well as collaborating with process equipment suppliers, required specialized expertise.
The lifecycle target for the new production plant is 50 years for structural components and networks and 25 years for the building’s technical systems.
Demanding Construction Work Completed on a Tight Schedule
The hot-dip galvanizing plant was built on a tight schedule in about a year. At its peak, around one hundred people were working on the site.
“SRV has handled the construction in an exemplary manner. Meeting the schedule was of utmost importance to us, and despite the tight schedule, the factory was completed exactly on time. The quality of construction and site arrangements during the building phase have also been top-notch,” says Ralf Sohlström, CEO of Aurajoki Oy.
