Caverion – Strong Collaboration for Sustainable Energy Solutions

Caverion is a market leader in technical services, designing, installing, maintaining, and managing solutions for buildings, industry, and infrastructure. The company operates throughout Finland with a workforce of approximately 5,000 professionals.

One of Caverion’s impressive projects involves power line modifications for Fingrid Oyj in the Helsinki metropolitan area. This includes alterations to power lines in the Espoo Hepokorpi area, where Caverion relied on Aurajoki’s expertise in steel structures and hot-dip galvanizing to produce three landscape towers. The partnership between Caverion and Aurajoki is not new—it has been built over ten years.

According to Caverion, quality and adherence to schedules were critical in this project, and Aurajoki’s reliability once again proved convincing. “Sticking to delivery schedules is extremely important for the success of the project and the achievement of financial goals”, says Jarkko Nevalainen, Head of Caverion’s Power Line Business Unit.

A Substation Supporting Sustainable Development

The new substation is crucial for electricity transmission and reliability in western Helsinki. It connects to Caruna Espoo Oy’s distribution network, Microsoft’s data center, and Fortum’s heat pump facility, which will use waste heat from the data center to provide carbon-free district heating.

“Sustainability is an essential part of Caverion’s operations, and the materials and structures for this project were locally sourced. This not only reduces CO2 emissions from production and transportation but also supports domestic employment. It’s great that we’ve been able to employ Finnish professionals in creating specialized structures”, Nevalainen explains.

The projects support Espoo’s climate goals, which aim for carbon neutrality by 2030.

Seamless Collaboration and Solutions

During the project, collaboration with Aurajoki has been excellent. Maintaining a regular meeting rhythm and quick responses to urgent matters were central to the success.

“Communication with Aurajoki’s personnel was fast, and their innovative approach enabled the high-quality execution of challenging structures”, Nevalainen notes.

This demanding project also brought challenges, but they were effectively resolved. “In projects like this, variables always arise, but Aurajoki handled them excellently—schedules and quality remained intact”, Nevalainen continues.

“The specialized expertise of our steel structure business was key to the success of this project. Thanks go to our entire team, but special recognition goes to our production planner, Anssi Ollikainen, whose robust professionalism supported the client from planning to completed landscape towers”, comments Timo Tuominen, Director of Steel Structures of Aurajoki.

Building a Sustainable Future Through Collaboration

The long-term collaboration between Caverion and Aurajoki demonstrates how Finnish expertise can be utilized in large infrastructure projects to achieve sustainable development goals. This project exemplifies how combining technical expertise, sustainable practices, and seamless collaboration can create solutions that serve both present and future societies.
