Power-line structures

Power-line structures are used for energy transfer in electricity networks. Typical transmission voltages in the power-line structures in Finland are 400 kV and 110 kV, and 70 kV and 130 kV in the other Nordic countries.

Typical transmission tower types are as follows:

  • Tubular guyed towers
  • Angle-iron towers
  • Tubular unguyed towers

The factors that affect the type of power-line structure used include the terrain, the voltage to be transmitted, the stress on the towers, and the land area available for the structure.

Our Infrastructure Products unit manufactures power-line structures in Finland at the Kannonkoski and Pirkkala plants. We rely on our network of Finnish subcontractors and seek to use domestic raw materials.

Our Kannonkoski and Pirkkala plants operate in compliance with the ISO 9001 quality management standard and the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, and have been awarded the EN 1090-1 certificate.

Tubular guyed towers

The tubular guyed towers are manufactured at the Kannonkoski plant.

A tubular guyed tower is made up of structural pipes that include factory-welded fastener and connecting plate parts and various support structures. The products are zinc-coated at our Lievestuore plant, which also provides shipments of tower, delivered, tower by tower, to locations specified by the power-line builder.

The typical height of the tubular guyed towers ranges between 12 and 36 metres.

Tubular unguyed towers

The tubular unguyed towers are manufactured at the Kannonkoski plant, according to customer specifications.

The tubular unguyed power-line towers are designed to be used in agricultural areas. The structure of the tower minimises the area required for building the power line, thus saving agricultural land.

The products are zinc-coated at our Lievestuore plant, which also provides shipments of towers, delivered, tower by tower, to locations specified by the power-line builder.

The typical height of the tubular unguyed towers ranges between 20 and 35 metres.

Angle-iron towers

The angle-iron towers are manufactured at our Pirkkala plant, using modern manufacturing technologies and exploiting the logistical advantages of the hot-dip galvanising unit located at the same plant.

Angle-iron structures are used in places where there is considerable stress on the power line and a small building area available.
